영어 속담의 한국어 번역에 나타난 기계번역의 오류 유형 분석

본 연구에서는 영어 속담을 세 종류의 번역 도구로 한국어로 번역하여 기계번역(machine translation)의 정확성과 오류 유형을 살펴보았다. 번역의 오류를어휘, 문장, 어법 등으로 나누어 분석한 결과, 세 종류의 번역기 모두 75% 이상의 높은 정확성을 보였다. 속담이 번역하기 어려운 텍스트임을 감안하면 상당히높은 정확성이라고 할 수 있다. 대표적인 오류 유형은 문장의 전체적인 의미 오류와 어휘 오류로 나눌 수 있었다. 아직까지는 속담의 번역에 있어서 오류가 많이 나오지만, 일부 영어 속담의 경우 문장의 구조를 변경하거나 어휘를 추가하여 적합한 한국어 문장으로 번역되었으며, 이는 기계번역이 지속적으로 발전하고 있음을 잘 보여준다. 기계번역의 어려움을 잘 보여주는 속담 이외에도 문학작품 등 다양한 텍스트의 번역 정확성 발전에 대한 연구가 더욱 필요한 시점이다.
Abstract
The goal of this study was to investigate the accuracy and error types of machine translation of English proverbs to Korean. All the three tools of translation used in the current study showed greater than 75% of accuracy. The two most common types of errors had to do with (a) the structure and (2) individual word of the proverbs. Even though there were many translation errors of proverbs, there were also some signs of development in machine translation including changes in sentence structure and adding new words. The main results of this study provided evidence for the continuing development in machine translation. The further research on the machine translation of other difficult text types such as literary works is necessary.
