Abstract

This paper analyzes Le Clézio's novel Alma (2017) under the themes of Filiation Narratives, Religious Pilgrimage, and Eco-Memory. The 2008 Nobel Prize-winning author has been trying to restore the unique cultural memories of Mauritius since the mid-1980s and his autobiographical works shed light on colonial historical records, polarized social reality, and severe ecological destruction of this Island. The two main characters of the novel Alma, Jérémie and Dominique, are both descendants of the Felsen family and record the experiences of discovering their goals in life and achieving inner maturity through their journeys to Mauritius and France, respectively. In this novel through a narrative construction of Multidirectional Eco-Memory that combines the tragic history of colonial servitude in Mauritius with the record of the extinction of Dodo birds, Le Clézio calls on us living in the Anthropocene to have a sense of ecological-responsibility ethics and solidarity of the global environment.
