Abstract
This study aims to examine the contribution of images to the history of discrimination and exclusion by deriving, classifying, and analyzing visual forms of madness by examining the expressions of visual culture that embody madness. To this end, we examine the ‘history of madness images’ sequentially from the time when images of madness were presented in allegoric way, when people dreamed of magic and miracles to cure madness, and then to the age of imprisonment that expelled madmen from society. It will then be revealed that the ‘face of the insane’ used in science and medicine worked rather in the mechanism of ‘knowledge-power’, as Michel Foucault said, and justified the production of typified and differentiated knowledge. The ‘Museum of Madness’ proposed by this study is not a place of death stuffed with past history, but a place of novelty where the dichotomy between normality and abnormality, subject and other disappears, and rather, otherness within oneself is discovered.
