이 연구는 한국 사회에서 몸과 외모에 대한 연구가 젊은 여성들에 국한되었다는 점에 착안하여 출발하였다. 평균수명이 길어지고 고령 인구가 늘어가는 현실을 감안할 때 중․노년 여성들의 외모 가꾸기 현황을 파악하고 이를 젊은 여성들의 외모가꾸기와는 다른 각도에서 접근하고 이해할 필요성이 있다고 판단하였다. 기존 연구가 부족한 초기 단계의 연구라는 특성상, 외모 가꾸기를 활발히 수행할 것으로생각되는 집단을 선별하여 포커스 그룹 인터뷰를 실시하였다. 서울 강남 지역에 거주하는 중산층 이상의 40대 이상 여성들 30명을 대상으로 인터뷰를 실시한 결과,중․노년 여성들도 외모 지향적인 사회에서 더 이상 예외적인 존재가 아니라는 사실을 발견하였다. 이는 ‘나이 드는 것에 대한 부정적인 인식’과 ‘성별에 따라 차별화된 사회적 기대’에서 기인한 것으로 보인다. 즉 성별과 연령의 이중 잣대가 적용되는 현실을 반영한다. 가족주기, 생애주기, 연령에 따라 실제적인 행동에는 차이가있지만 한국 사회에서 나이든 여성으로 살아간다는 것은 끊임없이 외모에 대하여평가받는 것이다. 더불어 팽창하는 미용 산업, 매스미디어, 소비 자본주의가 중․노년 여성까지도 외모를 가꾸도록 조장하고 있다. 연령의 경계를 뛰어넘은 외모지향성에 순응하는 것은 남성 중심주의와 연령차별주의를 심화시킬 수 있는 가능성을지니기 때문에 비판적으로 접근해야 한다. 후속 연구들을 통하여 보다 심도 있는논의가 이루어지기를 기대한다.
Abstract
This study challenges previous studies regarding body and adornment in Korea are limited to young women. Given that increasing numbers of aging population, understanding adornment of middle-aged and elderly women and approaching the phenomenon with different perspectives from that of young women is needed. Based on focus group interviews with 30 women over 40s living in Gang-nam area in Seoul, Korea, it is observed that middle-aged and elderly women are engaged in diverse activities regarding beauty care, although actual behaviors are different by family life cycle,age, and life cycle. It reflects double standard of age and gender in Korea. Living in Korea as an aging woman means that her appearance and body is continuously scrutinized and evaluated. Expansion of aesthetic industry,mass media, and consumption oriented capitalism also encourage women's engagement in appearance, which in turn strengthen male-centered ideas and ageism.
