Abstract

Since the Renaissance, Grotesque, which has been recognized as one of the artistic trends, has recently emerged as a bizarre behavior that defies conventions or customs of a society beyond the world of arts. Unusual acts have existed at any time. However, today, when innovation or transformation is called upon as a mission of the times, the acts that are considered a sign of dissatisfaction with the existing order and a sign of a sense of escape are encouraging the move to a “grotesque society.” Depending on Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory, this article establishes an conceptual framework that can enhance understanding of grotesque as social phenomena, and discusses the origin, characteristics, and consequences of grotesque social phenomena that are spreading in our society, focusing on the case of “Mukbang(eating show).” It also detects the path and effect of the grotesque by comparatively analyzing the properties of social grotesque and artistic grotesque in light of the cases of Daniel Spoerri’s ‘Eat Art’ and Julia Ducournau’s film ‘Titane.’ From this comparative case study based on the social aesthetics and practical arts approach, it is turned out that grotesque art is always open to extend to social grotesque via the power of empathy, while grotesque as a social representation cannot maintain its vitality without the artistic representation of grotesque by way of critical awakening of the existing order.
