진보와 진화의 개념은 각각 독자적으로 전개되었으나 일정한 시기에 교착되고 분리되는 과정을 겪는다. 서양사상에서 진보와 진화의 개념을 비교하는 일은 각각 근대의 초기와 후기에 해당하는 문화적인 격변과 관련이 있다. 진보라는 말은 17세기에 탄생하였고 진화라는 말은 19세기 중후반, 즉 근대 후기에 진화론의 등장과 더불어 대중화된다. 이 두 개념은 각각 서양의 근대의 시작과 끝을 보여 준다. 양차 대전 후 서양 근대의 몰락이 논의되면서 근대 300년을 수놓은 진보의 이상은 가열찬 비판의 대상이 되고 자기반성의 길로 접어들었다. 우리는 17세기 프랑스에서 진보 개념이 등장하여 의미를 확장하는 과정을 살펴본 다음, 18세기 프랑스혁명기 계몽사상가인 콩도르세에서 완성된 혁명적 진보 개념의 구상, 19세기 전반부에 과학적 진보의 이상을 구체화한 실증주의자 콩트의 3단계 진보이론, 19세기 전반부에 과학적 진보의 이상을 구체화한 실증주의자 콩트의 3단계 진보이론, 19세기 중후반 스펜서의 진보적 진화론을 차례로 살펴보고 19세기 말 진보의 이상이 진화 개념으로부터 분리되어 축소되기까지의 과정을 추적할 것이다.
Abstract
The concepts of progress and evolution had developed apart from each other,Yet, they experienced the processes of entanglement and separation of their own kind. In Western thought, their comparison was involved in the cultural upheavals occurring in early- and late-modern times, respectively. The term ‘progress’appears in the seventeenth century, while the term ‘evolution’gained currency with the appearance of the theory of evolution in the mid and late nineteenth century, that is, in late-modern times. These terms bear witness to the beginning and end of Western modernity respectively. With the arguments over the collapse of Western modernity after the two World Wars, the ideal of progress, which had permeated the modern world for three hundred years, or so, became a target of severe criticism, and underwent a process of selfreflection. The present essay examines the processes of the appearance and semantic expansion of the idea of progress in seventeenth-century France; it also scrutinizes, in succession, the project of revolutionary progress established by Condorcet, a philosopher of the French revolutionary period, the theory about the three stages of progress by Comte, a positivist, whose thoughts embodied the scientific ideal of progress in the first half of the nineteenth century, and the theory of progressive evolution by Spencer in the mid- and late-nineteenth century; finally, we will trace the processes where the ideal of progress had itself separated from the concept of evolution in the late nineteenth century, reducing its own implications.
