안토니오 무뇨스 몰리나의 『폴란드 기병』은 스페인 우베다의 지리적 역사적 여러 사실들과 작가의 자서전적 요소들을 결합하여 1991년 발표한 작품이다. 이야기의 구성을 서사 시간변조의 관점에서 살펴보면, 사건이 발생한 시간적 순서와 이야기의 서술 순서 사이의 변화가 복잡하게 나타난다. 1부 ‘목소리들의 왕국’의 메르쿠리오, 2부 ‘폭우 속의 기병’의 갈라스, 3부 ‘폴란드 기병’의 마누엘 등 세 인물에 대한 서술은 회상과 앞당김이 교차되어 얽혀져 있는데, 이야기의 마무리 과정에서 정교하게 맞물려 인과관계가 설명된다. 이러한 서사 시간변조는 새로운 미학적 효과를 발생시키는데, 이야기의 긴장과 해결, 의혹과 해소의 과정에서 독자의 시각을 집중시키는 소설의 동력이 발생하고, 그 인물의 삶을 부각시켜 그들이 처한 삶과 사회적 갈등에 대한 사색을 유도한다. 이 작품에서 사회적 갈등의 핵심은 내전으로 나타나는데, 내전에서 패배했던 공화파 인물들의 도덕적 정당성을 주장하고, 스페인 근대사의 근본적 문제점을 진단하고자 하는 작가의 의도로 해석된다.
Abstract
The novel, The Polish Rider published by Antonio Muñoz Molina in 1991 is a combination of geographical and historical facts of Úbeda, Spain and the autobiographical account of the writer. Anachrony in the narrative is all too visible with the chronological order of events in conflict with the order of description. Descriptions of three characters, Mercurio of the Part I, “The Kingdom of the Voices,” Galaz of the Part Ⅱ, “The Rider on the Storm,” and Manuel of Part Ⅲ, “The Polish Rider” alternate between analepsis and prolepsis. However, the events are exquisitely dovetailed in the concluding part, leaving the causal relationship intact. The anachrony in the narrative creates a new esthetic effect characterized by tension and its relaxation, dynamics of capturing the reader’s imagination in the process of raising doubts and clarifying them, and speculations on the lives of the characters and the social conflicts. The social conflicts in the novel are represented by the Spanish Civil War, through which the author is believed to try to vindicate the Republican combatants, who lost the war and shed light on the fundamental problems of modern Spain.
