Abstract
Recent climate change has led to an increase in summer precipitation in South Korea, contributing to the rising impact of forest disasters such as landslides. This study analyzes summer precipitation characteristics in both mountainous and non-mountainous (flat) regions using in-situ weather observational stations obtained from the Korea Meteorological Administration and the National Institute of Forest Science. During the summer season (Jun to Aug) over the period of 2015-2024, both mean and extreme precipitation have increased nationwide, with the most significant changes observed in western regions of South Korea. Although mountainous regions exhibit higher climatological precipitation, the increasing trend is more pronounced in flat regions. The mean summer precipitation is higher in mountainous regions (705.37mm) compared to flat regions (618.82mm). However, the linear trend in precipitation is greater in flat regions (35.74mm/10yr) than in mountainous regions (23.12mm/10yr), with a similar pattern observed for extreme precipitation. This pattern is attributed to the intensification of both the western North Pacific Subtropical High and cyclonic circulations over the Eurasian continent in recent years, leading to increased southwesterly moisture transport from the equatorial region to South Korea. As a result, precipitation has increased over South Korea, with a more pronounced enhancement in the western regions. Given the topographic characteristics of South Korea, where flat regions are concentrated in the west and mountainous regions in the east, the linear trend of precipitation is stronger in flat regions than in mountainous regions.
