Abstract
This study divided the development process of mexica poetry into two periods and studied the characteristics and changes of each period by different methodologies. The first period (1111-1428) is the period from Aztlán to the third king. In this period, Aztlán was established as the origin of the mexica, and the status and role of Huitzilopochtli were established. And Tenochtitlán was reconstructed into mythical and religious time and space. These characteristics were the result of the myth, religion, and historical reform of emerging political forces during the 4th and 5th King periods. The second period (1428-1519) is the period from the 4th king to the time before the fall of Tenochtitlán. During this period, various traditional poetry were activated and developed into five types of poetics. First, there existed poetry with pessimistic tendency, a traditional characteristic of the Nahuatl culture. And in opposition to pessimism, four types of poetic trends emerged to overcome the variability of the earthly world and secure eternity. First, there were traditional myths and religious poetry, as well as a poetry with a real-life tendency and ‘songs of flowers’. And there was a ‘war poetry’ that represents the nationalist ideology of Tenochtitlán.
