전통적으로 ‘사이시옷 첨가’로 불리는 한국어의 경음화현상(tensification)은 오랜 시간 음운론 연구자들의 많은 관심을 끌어왔다. 일반적으로, 한국어 복합어에서 일어나는 경음화현상을 두 낱말 사이에 /t/-첨가(/t/-Epenthesis)가 일어난 후 음성적 실현단계에서 삽입음의 영향으로 뒤따르는 평 자음(plain consonants)이 경음으로 교체된 것으로 보는 시각에는 큰 이견은 없어 보인다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 이 음운교체가 여전히 논란의 중심이 되는 이유는 유사한 음운적·형태적 환경에서 관찰되는 경음화현상의 불규칙성 때문일 것이다. 예컨대, ‘논두렁’은 ‘논뚜렁’으로 음운교체가 일어나지만 ‘문단속’은 ‘*문딴속’으로 발음되지 않고, 형태적으로 유사한 ‘김빱’과 ‘*콩빱’의 비교에서도 경음화현상의 규칙성을 포착하기는 쉽지 않아 보인다. 이런 이유로, 한국어의 경음화현상을 평 자음이 공명음과 모음 사이에 위치한 환경에서 일어난다거나 종속합성어(sub-compounds)에서 일어나는 현상으로 단정 지을 수 없으며 이는 경음화현상에 대한 보다 포괄적인 이해를 위해 음운론적·형태론적 조건 이외에 또 따른 관점에서의 접근이 필요함을 시사한다. 본 연구에서는 한국어 복합어에서 일어나는 경음화현상의 비대칭 문제에 대한 종래학자들의 주장을 살펴보고, 이 현상을 특정 운율 단위(prosodic unit) 내에서 삽입된 음의 확산(spreading)과 저지(blocking)를 사용 빈도와 연관하여 고찰해봄으로써 경음화현상에 대한 보다 포괄적인 이해를 시도하겠다.
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to reanalyze tensification in Korean compounds in relation to boundary weakening between constituents of compound words as well as to discover the reality of epenthesis which is largely responsible for the phonetic alternation. It has been argued that as the frequency of a compound word increases, it moves to core-structure in lexicon where it is perceived as a phonological unit. Then, the inserted distinctive feature [+glottal] is spreaded into the following plain consonant, causing the consonant to be tensed. On the other hand, when each unit of a compound word consists of different phonological units in periphery-structure, # boundary between words prevents the [+glottal] from being spreaded into the following syllable. In this case, all the connections between the interposed [+glottal] and surrounding syllable are disconnected, resulting in causing the [+glottal] to be floating. By taking advantage of the concept of core-periphery structure in lexicon and boundary weakening in phonological words, it has become possible to understand the irregularity of tensification in Korean compounds.
