이 연구의 목적은 발달장애 자녀를 둔 어머니들이 보고하는 자녀의 성인초기 생활과 이를 향상시키기 위한 지원 요구를 알아보는 것이다. 가정이나 그룹홈에 거주하며 20∼35세 이내의 발달장애 자녀를 둔 어머니 10명을 목적표집하여 두 차례에 걸쳐 초점집단면담을 실시하였다. 질적내용분석법을 통해 분석된 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 발달장애 청년들은 전일제 또는 시간제로 직업을 가지거나 평생교육센터, 복지관 등의 교육·복지 프로그램에 참여하는 등 자립을 위한 준비를 하고 있으나 아직 일상생활에서 자기관리가 서툴러 부모의 돌봄이 지속되고 있었다. 그런데 학교 졸업 후 가용시간이 많아졌으나 지역사회에서 할 일을 찾기가 어렵고 사회적 관계가 제한되나 학령기까지 받아오던 지원은 오히려 성인기에 들어오면서 사라졌다. 어머니들은 발달장애인들이 보다 의미 있는 성인초기를 보내기 위해서는 긍정적 사회적 관계의 확대를 위한 지원과 함께 종합적인 지역사회 지원 체계가 구축되어야 한다고 요구하였다. 이상의 결과를 바탕으로 발달장애인의 성인초기 생활 실태의 의미와 이후 지원 방향 등에 대해 논의하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate how the mothers of persons with developmental disabilities perceived their children’s early adulthood in their local communities and the support needs for improving it. Ten mothers were purposefully recruited; their children have developmental disabilities and were in their early-20s and mid-30s and living in their own home and local communities. Focus group interviews were executed twice and analyzed using qualitative content analysis suggested by Weber. The results were as follows: Young adults with developmental disabilities had full-time or part-time work and participated in various programs including lifelong education, rehabilitation, and/or leisure and sports. However, they suffered from a lack of activities they could do during the daytime and limited social relationships with others. Young adults with developmental disabilities also had difficulty in adjusting to numerous changes faced while transitioning to adulthood. In order to improve their quality of life in early adulthood, it is important to provide comprehensive support for both enhancing their social relationships and promoting a productive life in their local communities. Based on such results, the implications for the early adulthood of persons with developmental disabilities were discussed.
