Abstract
This study was investigated the impact of mis-specifying facets within 3-level multiple membership multilevel data structures. Multiple membership multilevel data structures are commonly encountered in longitudinal datasets but ignored in traditional hierarchical linear growth modeling analyses. This simulation study compared the relative biases and model fit indexes from the 3-level hierarchical linear growth models to those from correctly specified 3-level multiple membership multilevel growth models. The manipulated conditions were: multiple membership rate (10%, 20%), number of students per school (50, 100), and number of schools (100, 200). The results revealed the under-estimation of level-three variance components but also the over-estimation of level-two as well as level-one random effect variance components when the multiple membership data structure was ignored. The model fit values using deviance information criterion supported 3-level multiple membership multilevel growth models over traditional hierarchical linear growth modeling across all conditions.
