Abstract
This paper aims to present an overview the historicity and critics of cultural-historical activity theory. Cultural-historical activity theory was derived from and inspired by the cultural-historical school of psychology and numerous other studies from different cultural and historical backgrounds. It continues to evolve. By comprehensively reviewing the global literature, this study will offer researchers a better understanding of the theory. The first chaper explains its historical background. The second part focuses on critics and challenges identified by different scholars, and finally, suggestions for further development of the theory, namely the 4th generation, are introduced.
