Abstract
· Research topics: This study analyzes the factors influencing the mental health of middle-aged women (including depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, and mental health counseling) using data from the 2019–2023 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), and identifies the effects of lifestyle and nutritional factors on mental health. · Research background: Middle age is a transitional period characterized by both physical aging and changes in social roles. In particular, women experience not only physiological changes caused by menopause and hormonal decline but also increased role burdens within the family and workplace, making them more vulnerable to mental health problems. These changes can lead to psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation, while lifestyle habits and nutritional status have also been reported as important factors influencing mental health. Therefore, it is necessary to comprehensively identify the multidimensional factors associated with the mental health of middle-aged women. · Differences from prior research: Previous studies have mainly focused on limited aspects of mental health in middle-aged women, addressing either depressive symptoms or suicidal ideation as isolated factors, or emphasizing single determinants such as stress, menopause, or vitamin D levels. In contrast, this study utilized nationally representative data from the 2019–2023 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) to comprehensively analyze multiple mental health indicators, including depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, and mental health counseling. Furthermore, by integrating lifestyle factors (e.g., smoking, alcohol consumption, perceived stress) and nutritional factors (e.g., vitamin D, zinc, and fatty acids), this study distinguishes itself from previous research by empirically identifying the multidimensional influences on the mental health of middle-aged women. · Research method: This study utilized raw data from the 2019–2023 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) and analyzed 11,177 middle-aged women aged 20 to 64 years. Mental health indicators included depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, and mental health counseling experience. Complex-sample logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the effects of general characteristics and nutrient intake factors on mental health. · Research results: The analysis revealed that perceived stress level and current smoking status were the most consistent factors influencing depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, and mental health counseling. In addition, higher age was associated with an increased likelihood of mental health problems, and certain nutrients, such as vitamin D, zinc, and n-6 fatty acids, showed significant associations with mental health outcomes. · Contribution points and expected effects: This study provides empirical evidence on the factors influencing mental health among middle-aged women, offering foundational data for policy development and tailored intervention programs aimed at promoting mental well-being. Furthermore, by presenting an integrated approach that considers both lifestyle and nutritional factors, this study is expected to contribute to improving the quality of life of middle-aged women.
