Abstract

· Research topics: This study analyzes the effect of depression on suicidal ideation among women with disabilities and aims to test whether pet ownership moderates that relationship. · Research background: Women with disabilities face heightened vulnerability due to the intersecting factors of gender and disability, which increase the risk of depression and suicide. Companion animals can offer emotional support and social connection and thus have potential to positively influence mental health. This study examined the relationship between depression and suicidal ideation experienced by women with disabilities and tested whether pet ownership moderates that association. · Differences from prior research: This study revalidated the relationship between depression and suicidal ideation using a model suitable for a rare event outcome, specifically for women with disabilities, and empirically tested the moderating role of pet ownership. By demonstrating the limits of generalizing pet ownership as a protective factor, it provides a basis for designing future tailored interventions. · Research method: Using the 5th wave (2022) data from the Panel Survey on the Living Conditions of Persons with Disabilities, 2,009 women were analyzed. Descriptive statistics were produced for suicidal ideation, depression, and pet ownership (controlling for age, marital status, education, household size, and disability severity). Independent samples t-tests and chi-square tests were conducted. Because of the low prevalence of suicidal ideation (2.79%), Firth rare events logistic regression analysis was employed. · Research results: The effect of depression level on suicidal ideation among women with disabilities was tested using binary logistic regression. Depression showed a significant positive association with suicidal ideation. However, the moderating effect of pet ownership on the relationship between depression and suicidal ideation was not significant. The interaction term between depression and pet ownership was also examined and was not statistically significant. · Contribution points and expected effects: Although the average moderating effect of simply owning a pet appears limited within mental health interventions for women with disabilities, the findings highlight the need for extended research that incorporates qualitative and relational dimensions of human–animal interaction and for the establishment of customized mental health support systems grounded in intersecting vulnerabilities. Furthermore, the application of Firth rare events logistic regression in this study demonstrates its utility for datasets—such as those involving persons with disabilities—where outcome incidence is low, and it is expected that subsequent research will actively adopt this method to enhance stability and methodological validity.
