Abstract

This study focuses on the importance of overcoming sexual victimization myths when protecting and healing victims of sexual violence, creating victim-supportive social awareness and forming a culture that is conducive to sexual violence prevention. I conducted a survey with 235 victims of sexual violence in 2014. In order to accomplish the study aims, a descriptive analysis and t-test, along with a correlation analysis were utilized. According to the results of the study, the sexual violence victims experienced high victimization myths as well as rape myths. The correlation between the experience of victimization myths and the negative blame to family, relatives and community institutes was significant. Also, penetration, the major factor in rape myths, occurred or not, did not make much difference in experiencing rape myths or victimization myths. These results suggest the need for new persepctives on rape myths.
