오늘날 젠더 폭력과 규범을 둘러싼 논쟁에서 우리는 ‘정상’과 ‘표준’을 구성하는 ‘남성’ 섹슈얼리티의 어떤 지점들이 특권화되거나 신화화되는 장면을 목격한다. 그리고 이 신화화는 ‘남성’의 성적 욕망과 행위를 자연화하거나 ‘남성’의 성적 폭력을 정당화하는 기제로 작동하곤 한다. 이 신화화 기제의 핵심에 젠더 규범과 정체성 수행의 장소가 되는 담론장이 존재하는데, 본 논문은 이 담론장 가운데 <용재총화>와 구술 서사들을 대상으로 ‘남성 섹슈얼리티’ 신화의 서사적 계보를 탐색하고자 한다. 또한 이들 이야기 구성과 향유에 참여함으로써 개별 ‘남성’ 주체가 ‘호모소셜(homosocial)’의 경계 내부로 편입되는 과정에 주목하는 한편, 성적 폭력의 사건들이 일종의 ‘농담’으로 향유되는 장면에서 폭력을 은폐하고 정당화하는 ‘웃음’의 전략이 ‘남성 섹슈얼리티’의 불안과 동요를 어떻게 드러내는지 살펴보려 한다.
Abstract
This essay is a critical study on the mythology of male sexuality. In many oral narratives of Korea, various strategies which justify male sexual violence and naturalize male sexual desire are presented. In some oral narratives, the symbolic male penis is interpreted as having a magical power to solve all kinds of problems, such as women’s diseases and female inability to experience sexual pleasure. However, in these stories the penis is inserted to female body violently. At the core of this mythic mechanism is the quotidian discourse of the semi-public space, which acts as a platform for gender norms and gender identity in the intersecting public and private domains. This paper seeks to analyze the narrative framework that acts as a key mechanism in this discourse domain, investigating various fields. These narratives are mostly performed by males in homosocial community. Participation in the composition and enjoyment of these stories is a process by which individual ‘male’ subjects acquire ‘homosocial’ approval. And these stories are in most cases considered as sexual jokes. As a result, the sexual violence by males avoids ethical responsibility and criticism. The main points of interest are the Yong-Jae-Chong-Wwa(慵齋叢話) of Sung Hyun(成俔, 1439-1504) and oral narratives written in the 20th century. In some stories of the text, the female images are presented only as objects of male sexual desire. And ‘not-male’ factors constitute the outside of normal masculinity. ‘Not-male’ factors become the objects of the sexual jokes. The over and under of normal masculinity are ridiculed by in the homosocial community. It is also important to join in the laughing at of ‘not-male’ for every male of homosocial community.
