의료설화를 통해 본 名醫 柳義泰의 자취 연구

영남의 명의 류의태는 허준의 스승으로 잘 알려진 인물로 당대 최고의 神醫로 알려져 있으나 삶의 일면을 살펴 볼 수 있는 자료는 매우 미미하다. 본고에서 류의태 의료설화를 유형별로 분류해 그의 삶을 유추해 보았다. [명의의료담]에서는 名醫 류의태의 의료인적 면모를 담고 있으며, 의원처방의 중요성을 제시하고 있다. [효행자애의료담]에 천년두골쌍룡수 같은 구하기 힘든 약재를 쓴 것은 이 병이 난치병임을 극대화하기 위한 설정이며, 여기서는 효행과 정성이 치료여부를 결정한다. [요행의료담]의 환자가 대국천자, 임금 같은 높은 지위의 인물인 것은 류의태의 높은 의료수준을 반영한 것이며, 지배계층에 대한 풍자도 함께 표출된 것이다. [유력자담]에서 유력자의 역할은 류의태가 선택받은 名醫라는 점을 부각시켜주는 것이다. [주구획득담]에서 류의태는 呪具를 통해 名醫로 거듭난다. 등장하는 呪具도 점대롱, 蛇針, 거울 등 주로 의료기구라는 점에서도 주구의 획득이 ‘류의태 의료의 완성’을 상징한다는 것을 뒷받침 해준다. 류의태 의료설화 속 류의태의 유적지는 산청군 왕산과 황새봉의 류의태약수터, 거창 서마리의 침대롱바위, 여인을 기다리던 수승대, 대국천자에게 받은 성문(다름재~황산), 진양땅 자매마을 등 지리산과 산청부근에 밀집되어 있었다. 설화속 류의태 출현지역은 강원도, 산골짜기, 경남 합천, 경상도 진양, 경남 산청, 서울, 중국 등이며 유람을 했다는 내용이 자주 수록되어 있어 그가 전국을 누비며 의술을 펼친 자유분방한 인물로 인식되어 있음을 알 수 있었다. 반면 류의태 설화를 채록한 지역들을 확인한 결과, 모든 출처가 경상도 전반에 걸쳐 채록되어 있어 그가 산청 출신이란 점을 재확인할 수 있었다. 류의태 의료설화에 질병으로 痘疫, 난산과 산후풍이 많이 등장하는 것은 그의 주된 의학적 치료범주를 잘 보여주는 자료가 될 것이다. 병치료에 코딱지, 벽상토 등 하찮은 약재가 주로 쓰인 것은 치료약이 미비되었던 당시, 다양한 약재를 치료에 시도했음을 짐작할 수 있다. 설화속 류의태는 결국 명의나 영웅이 되는데, 그가 백성들에게 존경을 받는 의료인인 동시에 民을 더 나은 삶으로 이끌 영웅으로 기대를 받던 존재였다는 점도 유추해 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
Ryu Uitae got famous by a wonderful physician and a noted doctor Heo-joon's medical master during the Joseon period, but there remain only a few data about his contributions. This research analogized his life by classifying narratives on Ryu Uitae. Classification 1-"Great Healer Medical Service Tales" includes his aspects as a great healer. In classification 2-"Medical Service Tales with filial piety and affection", earnestness determines whether a medical treatment could be a success or not. In classification 3-"Lucky Medical Service Tales", reflects the high medical level of Ryu Uitae who worked as a court physician in charge of King Seonjo and in this Tales, there appeared a lot of patients in high places. Classification 4-"A man of influence Tale" highlights the point that Ryu Uitae was a chosen great healer. In classification 5-"Fetish Acquisition Tales", Ryu Uitae was reborn as a great healer through fetishes. These tales symbolizes "Consummation of Ryu Uitae's Medical Treatment." There appear historical sites in "Ryu Uitae Medical Service Tales", such as a mineral spring at Sancheong county, Chimdaerong Rock at Geochang, Sooseungdae, Dareum Pass & Castle Gate at Hwangsan, and Sister Village at Jinyang, all of which are clustered near Jirisan and in the neighborhood of Sancheong. The places where his tales were collected and recorded are located in Gyeongsand-do, which explains that Ryu Uitae was a person from Sancheong. In contrast, the sites appearing in tales range from Gangwondo to Seoul and China, which fact enables us to assume that he was a Bohemian during the Joseon period. There appear a lot of smallpox in symptoms of a disease, obviously reveals his high-level medical aspects. In addition, there appear a lot of women's difficult deliveries and postpartum arthritis & body chill. Above all it is easily revealed his major medical treatment. The appearance of trivial medicinal stuff suggests that a variety of stuff was used for treatment at that time when cures were rare. Ryu Uitae appearing in tales is described as a great healer or hero after all, through which we can assume he was a person in medicine who was respected by the populace and also expected to be a hero to lead the life of the grassroots.
