글로컬 문화지형과 지역학으로서 ‘영남학’의 위치

초록

최근 한국 사회에서 다양한 수준의 행정단위를 공간적 매개로 하는 ‘자문화연구’ 지역학이 열풍을 일으키고 있다. 이 연구의 목적은 국내 지역학 열풍의 시기에 수많은 자문화연구 지역학 분야 중 하나로 자리매김해온 영남문화연구원의 영남학을 지구화시대의 글로컬 문화지형과 지역학의 이론적·방법론적·인식론적 쟁점이라는 측면에서 비판적으로 조명해보는 데 있다. 이를 위해 영남문화연구원 설립 후 약 20년 동안 간행된 78편의 저역서, 연구원이 수행해온 연구 프로젝트, 그리고 연구원의 학술지인 『영남학』 70호까지 게재된 논문 437편을 분석한다. 그리고 그 분석결과를 지역학 일반의 공간성, 총체성, 인식론이라는 측면에서 고찰한다. 이 연구를 통해 드러난 사실은 크게 세 가지로 요약된다. 첫째, 영남문화연구원의 영남학은 지역학의 공간성과 그것을 둘러싼 이론적·방법론적 문제에 대한 체계적인 논의의 결여로 인해, 지구화시대를 살아가는 영남인들의 글로컬한 삶을 입체적으로 담아내는 데 전반적인 한계를 보여준다. 둘째, 연구원의 개원 당시 지향점으로 삼았던 학제적·총체적 접근을 실제 연구활동을 통해 구현하지 못함으로써 영남문화를 매우 파편적이고 편향적으로 재현하는 경향성이 두드러진다. 셋째, 지역학적 지식생산이 수반하는 인식론적 문제에 대한 고민의 부재로 영남문화를 지나치게 내부자적인 관점에서 재현해왔고, 그 결과 글로벌 수준의 학문적·실천적 쟁점과 연결되지 못한 채 매우 국지적이고 고립된 문제의식에 갇혀 있는 모습을 보여준다. 이 연구는 이러한 비판적 성찰을 통해 영남문화연구원의 지역학적 지식생산 이면에 숨겨져 있는 잘못된 이론적 가정과 방법론적·인식론적 관행들을 드러낸다. 이를 통해 개원 20주년을 앞두고 있는 영남문화연구원이 지역학 연구소로서 새로운 정체성과 학문적·실천적 비전을 구축하고 제2의 도약을 모색하는 데 필요한 지적 발판을 제공하고자 한다.

Abstract

In the last couple of decades, there has been a boom of domestic area studies whose domain of analysis corresponds to various administrative units of Korean society. This article aims at critically examining Youngnamhak(Youngnam Studies) conducted by the Research Institute for Youngnam Culture(RIYC) in the context of the glocal cultural landscape of globalization and the theoretical, methodological, epistemological issues polemic in area studies in general. For this, it analyzes 78 volumes of book published by RIYC, major research projects conducted by RIYC, and 437 pieces of article published in Youngnamhak, the academic journal issued by RIYC. And then it illuminates the implications of the results of analysis in terms of spaciality, holism, and epistemology of area studies in general. The research findings are summarized into three points. Firstly, Yougnam area studies conducted by RIYC has more or less failed in properly representing the lives of people in Youngnam area due to its lack of theoretical and methodological concerns on the changing spatiality of area studies in the age of globalization. Secondly, Youngnam area studies conducted by RIYC have represented only a few facets of Youngnam culture in academically biased ways because it has not actually practiced the interdisciplinary and holistic approaches that RIYC proclaimed at the time of its establishment twenty years ago. Finally, due to its lack of concerns on the epistemological issues of knowledge production in area studies and its rather exclusive emphasis on insiders’ point of view, RIYC’s Youngnam area studies have been intellectually very parochial, seriously isolated from the global academic and practical issues. Based on this critical review, this article tries to offer an intellectual jumping board for a new momentum for the development of RIYC soon celebrating its 20th aniversary.
