Abstract

Old documents related to civil service examinations in the Joseon Dynasty include answer sheets written by successful candidates at the examination venue and final pass certificates. While various Bangmoks contain biographical information about civil service examination passers and fragmentary information about individual examinations, answer sheets provide a vivid picture of the examination subjects, answer writing and grading methods, and candidates' arguments and writing skills according to the civil service examination system at the time the candidate wrote the answer sheet, and passing certificates provide objective factual information about the identity of the passer, the passing rank, and other information about the passer that has not yet been discovered. This paper updates the status of 15th century passing certificates, which was summarized once in 2017, and the results of research on answer sheets, which have been published until recently, and presents the basic arguments for future research through the analysis of individual documents.
