Abstract
This study examines the reception of Zhuangzi by Nammyung Cho Sik in three dimensions: literary embodiment, philosophical reflection, and practical appropriation. To this end, it analyzes the linguistic characteristics and modes of appropriation of Zhuangzi’s language and concepts as they appear in works included in Nammyŏngjip Cho Sik’s portrayal of figures is marked by an emphasis on the absence of calculating intent found in Zhuangzi. The symbols 雞伏, 尸淵, 雷龍, and 南冥 serve to express his Confucian identity and theory of self-cultivation through the language of Zhuangzi. Furthermore, key Daoist concepts such as 虛 and 無爲 are reinterpreted as methodologies for realizing Confucian values. While this reception superficially reveals a paradoxical tension between Confucian and Daoist thought, it fundamentally demonstrates a structure in which Daoist means are harmonized with Confucian ends. This form of reception is encapsulated in the concept of "活法", which transcends the boundaries of Confucianism and Daoism in pursuit of moral praxis. Even Cho Sik’s reclusive life, though Daoist in form, embodies Confucian ideals of moral transformation. Ultimately, this paper reveals how Cho Sik’s reception of Zhuangzi is structured by an integrative Confucian-Daoist mode of thought, thereby illustrating how the scholarly exclusivism toward Zhuangzi in early Joseon transitioned into a more open and practical mode of appropriation.
