Abstract
In Nabokov's novels, female characters perform a crucial role in revealing the true essence of the male protagonists. There are very few cases where the female character itself is the main character, and in most cases she functions as a counterpart to the male protagonist. While they contribute to the protagonist’s artistic development, they also expose the twisted desires inside the male characters leading their lives to deteriorate. In this paper, I explored the roles of female characters in the protagonists’ lives, particularly in Nabokov’s short stories “A Nursery Tale” and “An Affair of Honor.” Through these narratives, Erwin's unsettling fixation on women in “A Nursery Tale” and Anton Petrovich's façade of wealth concealing a timid and subservient nature in “An Affair of Honor” are unmasked through their interactions with women. Although Nabokov's short stories may not attain the same literary achievement as his full-length novels, they nonetheless offer early glimpses into his thematic preoccupations.
