Abstract
Nikolai Gogol places seeing at the center of “Viy” (1835). The protagonist, Khoma Brut, witnesses the monster and the witch, eventually meeting his death when his eyes lock with those of Viy. This act of seeing by the protagonist contrasts with the act of hearing by other characters. While other characters do not directly witness the events concerning the witch but instead hear about them from others, relying on the collective oral tradition, the protagonist alone sees the witch. This article explores how the individual’s perspective in “Viy” becomes powerless within the framework of collective oral tradition, while also discussing Khoma’s individuality that emerges from within this context. Gogol deliberately makes Khoma’s vision unreliable and isolates him at the moment he confronts the monsters, thereby undermining the credibility of his account. This article analyzes Khoma’s death as a struggle to escape from his isolation – physical and visual. It interprets Khoma’s death as an expression of individuality represented by visual curiosity. Furthermore, it compares “Viy” to “Nevskiy Prospekt” (1835), another Petersburg tale written around the same time, suggesting that both works share a problem about unstable vision and individuality. By comparing these two works, this article discusses the imperfect individuality depicted in Gogol’s literary world. In doing so, it aims to redefine “Viy” not only as a rewriting of folk tales but also as a fiction that explores the theme of individuality.
