초록
By reading Arthur Miller’s 1956 A View from the Bridge in connection with his personal writings of passion and anxiety about the tumultuous years of the early 1950s, this study explores in what aspects of Eddie Carbone, the protagonist deemed as not a usual tragic hero to readily identify oneself with, the playwright might have seen his own involvement. The sympathetic portrayal of Eddie reflects Miller’s maturing views on humanity as well as his complicated involvements with his contemporaries. Specifically, Miller sees the vitality of a force, the will to live and fulfill his humanity, in Eddie’s total commitment to the depth of his being and his unreserved willingness to push the boundaries of human nature. In Eddie’s authenticity of being, Miller also sees the lost idealism of the traditional left, the dream of a just and democratic future stranded in the ideological and political turmoil of Cold War America.
