Abstract
This paper searches for research methodologies of Asian Women’s Studies in the context of postcolonial local studies. Social scientific methodologies of Area and / or Asian Studies need to be reformed through an application of humanities scholarship. Since the central task of the humanities is to exercise imagination and nourish sentiment, it can redeploy the unlimited desire incited by our present era of globalization. For such a reformation, a new ‘planetary’ interpretive and imaginative horizon can help overcome the present capitalistic ‘globality from above’, emphasizing the need for the ‘local’ to criticize and overcome nationality and Occidentalism. Following this planetary horizon, feminist inter-referencing readings deal with non English-speaking postcolonial local histories and languages / cultures against and over simple comparisons between them. Such readings would result in those multiple and cross readings and suggest ‘globality from below’ by overcoming the centeredness of East Asian metropolises and by opening the field of tricontinentalism and com- municating with the postcolonial local histories and languages / cultures of Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
