Freeman and Kliman’s Formal Logic versus Marx’s Causal Logic

This paper shows that 1) Marx accepted and used causal logic when he criticized Ricardian dogma and the quantity theory of money; 2) Freeman and Kliman adopt formal and criticize causal logic but their charge is merely based on their misunderstanding of the latter; 3) although they acknowledge that the MELT (Monetary Expression of Labor-Time) remains indeterminate, circular reasoning appears in their theory because commodities and money enter into the circulation process without prices and value respectively; 3) Freeman and Kliman share formal logic with Marxist simultaneists and post-Sraffians who argue respectively that the value and prices of inputs and output should be simultaneously determined and replace causal determination with calculation.
Abstract
