Abstract
This writing is for the study on Yi Sung Gae Prayer Altar at Mt. Keumsan in Namhae whose related story has been passed down as a legend that he had prayed there before he founded Chosun Dynasty. The first official records to say that Mt. Keumsan has something to do with the legend of Yi Taejo are two stone monumemnts written by Yoon Jung Gu in 1903. One of the two is, especially, noticeable because it provides us with the information that one monument was built based on a legend of Yi Taejo in the area of Namhae in the late Chosun Dynasty and that it earned official approval from government. The other, built in the period of the Daehan Empire, lauds Emperor Gojong's virtuous deeds and prays that he would be a great king. It is also worth attracting our attention in that its location is Mt. Keumsan. Except for these two pieces of inscription, there are no more official things mentioning the legend of Yi Taejo. Fortunately, however, other relevant stories can be found in some travel journal sections in private collections of works, in which Yi's prayer places are differently described by different writers. Among those writings ‘Keumsan-Ki(The Record of Mt. Keumsan)' by Lee Woo Sun in 1865 is the first to describe where Yi Taejo Prayer Altar was. It says that in the east of Bori-Am Temple lay an altar at which Yi Sung Gae performed rituals for mountain spirits. The location of the altar described in Keumsan-Ki is not very much different from those indicated in subsequent writings by other people. Judging from this, the story about the altar seems to have been known and handed down only after around 1860's when Lee Woo Sun traveled to Keumsan and first introduced it in his book.
