Abstract

There was Mt. Jiri spreading throughout many towns of Yeongnam and Honam area and there were many secret places not to reach the force to authorities(官) because of deep valleys. And Mt. Jiri has fertile areas, so several crops grew abundantly and there were several livelihood measures. So this place was appropriate for the poor people to live in hiding and became hotbed for fugitives or thieves. In addition, There were many famous poeple who lived retired to Mt. Jiri since Silla Dynasty. Mt. Jiri have been appointed as Namak(南岳) from Country since Silla Dynasty and has been is valued, thus it was mystery associated with founding tales of past dynasties and rulers or government officials used it. It became more mysterious with Buddhism(佛敎) and Taoism(道敎) among ordinary people as passed down to later generations and ordinary people with the disease came and prayed and shamans gathered a lot. This flourishing of holy mountain faith(山神信仰) also influenced Buddhism. This mysterious Mt. Jiri also appeared frequently popular confidential documents(秘記) in the Joseon Dynasty period and prophetic writings(讖說) associated with Mt. Jiri were created. The hiding places from the war or good places(福地) had also been mentioned quite a lot. However, as dispossessions of authorities were increased in Mt. Jiri since the middle of the Joseon Dynasty, ordinary people or monks and shamans have been escalating their complaints. Therefore, if any conditions or instrument are prepared, the potential to change to resist against authorities(官) was very high with cooperation. In fact, thieves activities were more activities in Mt. Jiri than in any other mountains throughout the Joseon Dynasty period. There were these cases quite a lot that the forces who Intended to political rebellion or promoted the transformation of society wanted to use Mt. Jiri. The thieves cases or rebellion or transformation movements had an effect to the near towns, so the possibility to exacerbate overall recognition and enthusiasm among them was high compare to other areas.
