Abstract

In the first half of the twentieth century, there emerged conflicting national historical discourses about the invention of the first rain gauges and their observational records in Japan, China and Korea. The rain gauges, however, had apparently been ‘invented’ in fifteenth-century Joseon, a Korean royal dynasty. Thus the history of science in Joseon had to be appropriated into different national historiographies. This article aims to analyse and compare how, and for what purposes, three pioneering science-historians in each country – Wada Yuji in Imperial Japan, Zhu Kezhen in semi-colonised China, and Hong Iseop in Colonial Korea – ‘rediscovered’ and ‘nationalised’ Joseon’s rain gauges and their astrometeorological observations in the middle of learning and coping with Western sciences in the first half of the twentieth century. Its focus is on how their scientific pasts were constructed while confronting their urgent contemporary politico-scientific issues and setting the critical agenda for their ideal scientific nations. Wada reconstructed and extended Joseon’s rainfall observations based on Western meteorological methods, and presented the result within his scientific historiography of Imperial Japan as the only modernised, and thus civilising, nation in Asia, whereas Zhu subsumed Joseon’s rain gauges under the Sinocentric worldview in the past, denying both Joseon’s and Japan’s claim to the rain gauges, as an advocate of scientific tradition in China, upon which his scientific programme to save the nation could be built. In contrast to Wada and Zhu, Hong, as a historian, could not offer any scientific programme for Colonial Korea, but only gathered up dispersed ‘raw data’, which hopefully later generations of scientists, liberated from Japan, would be able to use in their making of a new scientific modern nation. Here, more emphasis is upon the case of Colonial Korea, because its colonization led to a peculiar situation, compared to China and Japan, in which Hong published his History of Korean Science first in Japanese in 1944, and later ‘translated’ it into Korean in 1946 right after Korea’s liberation in 1945. Thus a careful comparison of the two versions gives us a more nuanced reading of Hong’s political intention underlying his historiography; Hong’s Japanese version, in contrast to his Korean version, described various achievements in the Korean history of science in a dry, non-nationalist tone, partly due to Japan’s colonial oppression, but partly as a strategy to demonstrate Korean’s non-inferiority in a ‘scientific’, thus ‘neutral’, way. Lastly, despite not addressing the popular nationalist interest in the historical disputes about first claim to rain gauges in an attempt to show their scientific superiority in the three East Asian countries, this article argues that the history of astrometeorology has important political implications today. Historico-scientific interest in astrometeoroloical data, albeit strongly motivated and shaped by strong nationalist currents, later became later a crucial factor in shaping historical climatology in the second of the twentieth century in East Asia. An understanding of the historical process here in question, therefore, will sharpen our perspectives on the evolving relationship between science, nations (or nation-states), and their histories on the one hand, and our awareness of the import of the notion of ‘regionality’ and ‘mediation’ on the other, which could suggest a better way to cope with the urgent politico-scientific issues connected to climate change in this area.
