Abstract
Marx’s love for Shakespeare is a well-known fact. On the assumption that Marx’s criticism of Lassalle that he must “Shakespeareanize more” helps to understand Marx’s lifelong quest for his own method of presentation, this paper aims to show that Shakespeare is important to determine how Marx’s dialectical method differs from Hegel’s. Marx’s method of presentation is comparable to a dramatic structure. First, it tries to bring about the effect of heterogeneous descriptions by arranging different temporalities rather than totalizing them in a single temporal frame. Second, it places things ( Dinge ) as the main characters and has them speak. In Capital , Marx sought to avoid both positivist economic analysis and Hegel’s totalizing dialectics, and Shakespeare offered him the medium of securing the uniqueness of his method of presentation while avoiding these traps. Thus, in Capital , Marx shows simultaneously the possibility and impossibility of the capitalist reproduction system by adopting a dramatic structure.
