Abstract

It is true that Korean Confucianism has experienced ups and downs throughout the 20th century, and its status and role have been significantly weakened compared to the past. However, this process, on the other hand, can be said to have been a process in which Korean Confucianism found its place in response to the changing circumstances of the times when Korean society was fully encountering Western modern civilization. Although the circumstances of the times have created a situation in which it cannot play the role of the central ideology that guides our lives, modern Korean Confucianism is renewing its content and system in a direction that positively leads our society in the present and future based on a new understanding of tradition. Based on this perspective, this paper aims to roughly examine the life and activities of Sanam(汕巖) Byeon Si-yeon(邊時淵, 1922-2006), who maintained the appearance of a traditional Confucian scholar and engaged in various activities throughout the Japanese colonial period, the modernization process after liberation, the political transformation period, and modern Korean society. He was born during the Japanese colonial period, received a traditional Confucian education, and became associated with various academic schools that formed the central stream of modern and contemporary Korean Confucianism. After liberation, he conducted a series of activities to confirm the tradition of Korean Confucianism and establish a new tradition together with the writers of major schools that survived until the time. He maintained an open attitude without being immersed in the doctrines or social relationships of a specific school, and engaged in a wide range of academic activities such as publishing anthologies of sages, organizing major historical sites, and re-recognizing Confucian traditions, centered around Jangseong in Honam. In particular, he achieved the feat of compiling the massive 《Munwon(文苑)》, which collected and organized numerous Chinese works from the Three Kingdoms period to the early 20th century over a period of 30 years. While laying the foundation for Korean studies, he formed a poetry club with leading writers from the Honam region and worked actively, while leaving behind 50 volumes of his own poetry collection. In this paper, I paid attention to Byun Si-yeon’s diverse academic activities throughout the 20th century, and examined the process of his academic formation, focusing on his family studies that formed the basis of his academic activities and the major scholars of various academic disciplines that influenced his academic stance. Based on this, I examined his academic activities that spanned over 50 years from his early youth, focusing on the perspectives of the succession of Korean Confucian traditions and the establishment of new Confucian traditions. Through this, I aimed to lay the foundation for future research on Byun Si-yeon’s academics and activities as a representative Confucian intellectual of the 20th century.
