Abstract
This study examines 117 Kimun(記文), or commemorative writings, composed by the late Joseon Confucian scholar Myeonwoo(俛宇) Gwak Jongseok(郭鍾錫, 1846–1919), focusing on how his historical consciousness is reflected within these texts. The Kimun are systematically analyzed according to their time of composition, geographic distribution, subject type, and associated clans. The writings span from 1887 to 1919, with notable concentrations in 1905 and 1913. More than 80% of the subjects are located in Gyeongnam(慶南) Province, particularly centered around Geochang(居昌), which indicates not only Gwak’s active interaction with local Confucian scholars but also his role as a key spiritual leader in the region at the time. Additional Kimun target structures in Gyeongbuk(慶北), Jeolla(全羅), Seoul, and Hamgyeong(咸鏡道) provinces. The subjects of the kimun include Ancestral Shrine(齋室, 34), Private study halls(書齋, 33), Pavilions(樓亭, 25), Confucian schools(書堂, 13), Honorific Arch(旌閭, 10), and Place names(地名, 2). A distinctive feature of his writings is the absence of scenic travel records(山水遊覽記). Each kimun reflects themes inherent to its subject: ancestral reverence in Ancestral Shrine(齋室), scholarly cultivation in Private study halls(書齋), and educational ideals in Confucian schools(書堂). Through these writings, Gwak not only documented facts but also expressed his diagnosis of contemporary crises and his resolve to overcome them. In particular, amid an age of doctrinal confusion and the decline of Neo-Confucian orthodoxy, he emphasized the importance of a response grounded in study for the sake of cultivating the self Through this principle, he advocated for the realization of the public self(公吾), and further envisioned the expansion of this self into a collective identity—Odong(吾東 or 我東), aspiring for Joseon to serve as the final bastion of Confucian civilization. This study thus reinterprets Gwak Jongseok’s kimun not merely as records of commemoration, but as humanistic writings where space, individual, Confucian values, and historical change converge.
