한국교육개발원(2004)의 교육인적자원지표에 의하면, 한국인의 건강정보이해능력은 OECD 국가들 중 최저(38%)로 나타났다. 또한 선행 연구에서도 일반한국인과 학생들의 건강정보이해능력이 대부분 초등학교와 중학교 1∼2학년 수준으로 매우 낮게 측정되었다. 이러한 것을 고려해 볼 때, 여성결혼이민자들은 이민이라는 특수한 사회적 상황을 경험하고 있기 때문에 일반적인 건강과 관련된 의학적인 용어와 정보를 이해하는 데에는 더 많은 어려움이 있을 수밖에 없다. 이에 본 연구에서는 한국형 건강정보이해능력 측정도구를 이용하여 여성결혼이민자의 건강정보이해능력 수준과 건강에 대한 태도, 심리적․신체적 스트레스, 삶의 만족도를 분석하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 여성결혼이민자의 건강정보이해능력은 일반한국인들에 비해 현저히 낮았다. 둘째, 건강정보이해능력이 낮고 거주기간이 길수록, 여성결혼이민자의 스트레스 지수가 높고 삶에 대한 불만족도가 높았다. 여성결혼이민자의 낮은 건강정보이해능력은 이들이 한국인으로서 의료 혜택의 정당한 권리를 누리는 데 장애 요인으로 작용할 수도 있기 때문에, 건강정보이해능력이 여성결혼이민자들에게 미치는 영향을 이해하는 것은 매우 의미 있다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 앞으로 더 많은 건강정보이해능력의 개념을 적용한 여성결혼이민자들에 대한 연구가 나와 이들에게 보다 나은 의료서비스를 이용할 수 있는 전략을 개발해야 할 것이다.
Abstract
According to KEDI (2004), Koreans’ functional literacy ranked low among OECD countries. The existing studies also showed that Koreans’ health literacy scores were on average between the 7th and 8th grade levels which are very low compared to those of the USA. Given this fact, female married migrants in Korea might experience more difficulties in utilizing health services because of their language problems, the lack of common medical knowledge and health information. The purpose of this study is to measure health literacy among female married migrants and to examine the relationship of their health literacy with their attitudes toward health, physical and psychological stress, and satisfaction of life. The results show that among this part of the population health literacy rates were significantly lower than among the average of all Koreans. And the lower their health literacy scores are and the longer they live, the more they feel stressed and dissatisfied with their life. This implies that low health literacy for this group could become a barrier to fully enjoying their rights to health as Koreans. It is suggested that we could utilize the concept of health literacy in explaining female married migrants’ health-related subjects.
