Abstract
This study was conducted to identify the characteristics of healthcare service utilization, health status, and health behaviors of unskilled Vietnamese female migrant workers in Korea. The study analyzed the demographic information, physical measurements, clinical examinations, and health behavior data of 249 Vietnamese women who worked in low-skilled occupations and had lived in Korea for less than 6 years, using data from the “Domestic Immigrants Cohort Study (2006-2010).” The results of the analysis showed that the study participants had low rates of hospital-level medical service utilization (46.1%), and evaluated their subjective health status as very poor (74.0%). They reported experiencing fatigue, irregular menstruation, and gastrointestinal symptoms at rates of 63.9%, 57.4%, and 63.2%, respectively. Their healthy eating score was slightly above average, with an average score of 33.33 out of 50 points. They had a low consumption rate of dairy products and tended to consume high-sodium diets. Participants with low household monthly incomes consumed significantly more fried and greasy foods than those with higher incomes. It was also found that as the length of their stay in Korea increased, more participants were unable to have three meals a day. Policy support for the universal health coverage and improvement of health status and behaviors of female migrant workers with low proficiency in Korea, as well as the activation of community-based programs supported by the local industry, are needed.
