Abstract

In this article I followed up the history of surname, which ends up patrilineal family name and coverture in European modern times. The surname was not originally immanent in West-European civilization, but invented during the High Middle Ages. It seems to have been introduced and developed with the feudal system being established. The population growth, the economic prosperity, and the strengthening of the feudal political hierarchies seem to facilitate the use of surname, which was eventually established as inherited patrilineal family name system in 19th century Europe. In this article I try to revisit new-materialistically the historical materialism of F. Engels’ The Origin of the Family, Private Property, and the State. The word ‘new materialism’ means on the one hand that I do not agree to the concept of the necessity of historical progress in a historical unit society by the immanent dynamics of the economic contraditions. On the other hand, the medieval law of coverture, for example, was embodied as the biological difference between two sexes and as social institutions of modern patriarchy.
