This paper describes the design of an area-efficient interpolation FIR filter with partitioned lookup table (LUT) structure. Since the LUT block occupies a large portion of area in the FIR filter, the proposed filter structure targets reduction of LUT size by partitioning, by exploiting coefficient symmetry, and by sharing the partitioned LUTs through the multiplexing of input data streams. Experimental results for several benchmark examples show that the proposed filter reduces the area by over 40% compared to the popular single-architecture dual-channel filter, while the power consumption is comparable to or less than that of conventional filter structures. The proposed FIR filter was designed for the 3-channel W-CDMA mobile station modulator.
