Abstract
This paper presents the MEMS sensor based pedestrian navigation system and the integrated navigation technology for seamless positioning of a pedestrian. The walking dynamics of a pedestrian are perceived using the MEMS-type accelerometer. Simultaneously, walking information of the pedestrian is extracted from the sensor output. And then the velocity or stride is estimated based on the extracted walking information. The pattern of the sensor output varies according to the mounting region of the sensor module on walking. So, the different walking detection algorithm, the best important factor in the MEMS sensor based pedestrian navigation, must be considered with respective to the patterns. In this paper, the walking detection algorithms are presented based on the mounting region of the sensor module. The stride calculated using the walking information is integrated with the azimuth computed using the MEMS-type magnetic compass to yield the moving trajectory. The position error, however, is increased with time due to the DR(Dead Reckoning) construction. This paper proposes a filter to integrate the MEMS sensor based pedestrian navigation with GPS/wireless location. This can yield the seamless stable position information in both indoor and outdoor. The performance of the filter is verified through simulation.
