Abstract

Digital convergence creates new markets where enterprises expand their core capabilities into other industries, mutating the relationship between enterprises from cooperation to competition. This paper considers industrial convergence as the competition between two different industry-based enterprises with differentiated products (device and service). Both enterprises could be considered as local monopolies in the same convergence market and have significant market powers in their own industry. We firstly employ the framework used by the basic model of undercut proof equilibrium, and analyze the equilibrium state for each scenario of consumer preference with the existence of interoperability among the products. Marginal costs and consumer's transportation cost for service and device, and number of consumer by preference type are three main factors that affect the equilibrium states. The automotive telematics industry is chosen for the case study of industry convergence. Equilibrium prices and social welfares affected by products interoperability were analyzed by using the simulation work as variables for service's changed against the fixed values for device. The results present recommendations to the discussion of strategy and policies related to industry convergence where competition is expected to become continuously severer.
