Abstract
The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for policy development by examining the current status in and need for the management of special education support centers(SESCs) which are locally-based support system. To achieve this purpose, the study surveyed 146 school inspectors of the offices of education in charge of the management of SESCs as well as 126 specialized or support teachers of SESCs. The findings of this study are as follows: (1) generally, all the support functions of SESCs which the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development suggested were evaluated below 4 points and this suggested that SESCs do not conduct their support functions appropriately, (2) the reasons why the support functions of SESCs were not activated include lack in specialized staff, financial support, preferential treatment for support staff, nexus and cooperation among relevant institutions, publicity about SESCs, and facilities, equipment and assessment tools, and too great a work of the schools inspectors; and (3) SESCs adopt a phase-by-phase support model. Lastly, the study suggests implications for policy development for activating the management of SESCs in Korea.
