한 소규모 초등학교 교사들의 혁신학교에 대한 질적 사례연구

최근 혁신학교가 전국적으로 확산되고 있는 가운데, 경상남도에서도 2015년부터 혁신학교를 새로운 교육감의 주요 교육정책으로 추진하고 있다. 이 연구는 경상남도의 혁신학교 프로젝트에 해당하는 ‘행복학교’ 이전 단계인 ‘행복맞이학교’로 선정된 한 소규모 초등학교의 교육혁신 사례를 살펴봄으로써 새로운 교육혁신 모델로서 혁신학교의 가능성과 혁신학교 실천을 위해 요구되는 최적의 조건을 탐색하기 위한 목적으로 이루어졌다. 이를 위해, 연구자들은 동료 교사들과의 참여 관찰, 다양한 교육적 활동 과정을 통한 학생 관찰 및 성찰일지 작성, 그리고 학부모 인터뷰를 통해 혁신학교 관련 자료를 수집하였다. 수집한 자료는 전사, 코딩, 주제 생성의 3단계 분석방법을 활용하였다. 한 소규모 초등학교 교사들의 교육혁신 사례의 특징은 첫째, ‘입체관심 전략’: 부적응 학생의 문제행동 수정 프로젝트, 둘째, ‘행복가족제도’: 학교폭력 예방과 올바른 인성 기르기, 셋째, ‘나이테 학교공동체’: 상호 신뢰와 지원으로 유기적 협력공동체 구축, 넷째, ‘배움 촉진’: 또래학습, 프로젝트 수업, 체험학습의 효과 등 4가지로 압축될 수 있었다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 소규모 학교의 특징을 살린 혁신학교 모델, 교육혁신을 위한 긍정적 교사관계 형성, 그리고 행복학교가 추구하는 정책구현의 세 가지 시사점을 제안하였다.
Abstract
Purpose: The results of many studies show that small schools have various educational benefits and great potential value with regards to school innovation. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to identify the characteristics of innovative cases that were implemented by elementary teachers working at a small school in the Kyungnam province. Design/methodology/data/approach: Researchers selected a small school that consisted of 78 students and 9 teachers as a case study. Researchers collected data through participatory observation of teachers and students, teachers' reflective diaries, and interviews with students' parents. Data was analyzed by using a 3 step method: transcription, coding, and theme finding. Findings/Results: Researchers found four standout strategies within the case studies of innovative activities. First, a multi-dimensional caring strategy: a misbehavior modification project for dealing with students with problems. Second, a happy family system: which included school violence prevention and good character fostering. Third, a sharing-achievements-without-walls school community: which functioned as a collaborative community building atmosphere based on mutual beliefs. Fourth, learning facilitation: peer-tutoring, class projects, and experience studies. Value: Based on these four results, the article suggests three implications: the direction of the innovative school model, the importance of a positive teacher relationship, and the realization of innovative school policies.
