Abstract

The purpose of this study is to verify the sequential mediating effects of internalized shame and self-compassion on the relationship between insecure attachment and social anxiety of college students. For this, an online survey was conducted, in which a total of 354 college students participated nationwide. Measuring tools included SADS (Social Avoidance and Distress Scale), ECRR-K (Korea version of Experience in Close Relationship-Revised Scale), ISS(Internalized Shame Scale), and K-SCS (Korean version of Self-Compassion Scale), and the data were analyzed using structural equation model testing. Findings of this study as follows: First, insecure attachment displayed positive correlation with internalized shame and social anxiety on the other hand, it showed negative correlation with self-compassion. Internalized shame displayed negative correlation with self-compassion and positive correlation with social anxiety. Self-compassion displayed negative correlation with social anxiety. Second, from the result of verifying the sequential mediating effects of internalized shame and self-compassio n on the relationship between insecure attachment and social anxiety, it was found that int ernalized shame and self-compassion fully mediated in the relationship between attachment avoidance and social anxiety and partially mediated in the relationship between attachment a nxiety and social anxiety. The results of this study speculated that applying training program of reducing internalized shame and boosting self-compassion to college students, who have insecure attachment, in the actual counseling process will significantly alleviate the level of social anxiety they experience.
