모-청소년 자녀의 자존감, 성격특성 및 의사소통 방식이 상대방과의 갈등에 미치는 영향: APIM 모형의 적용

초록

본 연구는 서로 상관된 커플자료를 개별 자료로 분석함으로써 검증에서 발생하는 제 1종 오류의 증가를 방지하기 위한 Kenny(1996)의 APIM(Actor-Partner Interdependence Model)을 이용하여 모-청소년 자녀의 갈등문제를 다루었다. 이를 이용하면, 한 개인의 특징이 상대방에게 미치는 효과(상대방효과)뿐만 아니라, 그 특징이 자신에게 미치는 효과(자기효과)도 살펴볼 수 있다. 구체적으로 170쌍의 모-자녀 쌍을 대상으로 그들의 자존감, 성격특성 및 의사소통방식이 갈등에 미치는 효과를 자기효과와 상대방효과로 구분하여 알아보았다. 주요 결과로 첫째, 자존감과 성격특성에서 모-자녀는 유의하게 유사하였다. 이는 본 연구의 대상인 모-자녀의 자료가 상호의존적 자료임을 보여주는 것이다. 둘째, 각자의 자존감이 자신 및 상대방의 갈등에 미치는 효과에서는 자기효과가 상대방효과보다 더 크게 나타났다. 한편 상대방 효과에서는 어머니의 자존감이 자녀의 갈등에 미치는 효과보다는 자녀의 자존감이 어머니의 갈등에 더 큰 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 어머니의 자존감은 아들보다 딸의 갈등에 더 큰 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 모-청소년 자녀의 성격특성에 따른 갈등효과에서는 모-자녀 모두에서 신경증이 높을수록, 자신이 갈등이 크게 느끼고 있었으며(자기효과), 특히 딸의 신경증이 클수록 어머니의 갈등이 큰 것으로 나타났다. 또한 어머니의 성실성이 낮을수록 자신의 갈등이 클 뿐만 아니라, 자녀(아들과 딸 모두)의 갈등도 큰 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 자녀의 문제형 의사소통은 어머니의 갈등을 크게 만드는 것으로 나타났으나 어머니의 의사소통 방식은 자녀의 갈등에 큰 영향을 주지 않았다.

Abstract

The present study purports to investigate the effects of a mother's and an adolescent's self-esteem, personality, and communication patterns on their conflicts, using Kenny's APIM(Actor-Partner Interdependence Model, 1996). One hundred and seventy mother-adolescent couples in Changwon participated in the study. They each answered the questionnaire about their self-esteem, personality, communication styles, and conflicts with their partner. The major findings are as follows: First, their self-esteem affected their own conflicts more than their partner's conflict. In terms of its partner effect, the effect of an adolescent's self-esteem on a mother's conflicts was greater than that of a mother's self- esteem on her adolescent's conflicts. By gender, a mother's self-esteem had more impacts on a daughter's conflicts than on son's. Second, regarding conflicts based on a couple's personality, the more neurotic both a mother and an adolescent were, the more conflicts they felt(actor effect). The more faithful a mother was, the less conflict she and her child experienced. But an adolescent's conflicts did not exert many effects on a mother's conflicts. Finally, the communication patterns had a bearing on their conflicts. But the magnitude of actor effect was larger than that of partner effect. The more a mother and an adolescent took on problematic communication, the larger the conflicts they had. Specifically, an adolescent's problematic communication made his or her mother's conflict larger. Communication patterns a mother adopted, however, had no effect on an adolescent's conflicts.
