Abstract

Theft crime has been recorded as the highest rate in Korea as well as it displays highest recidivism rates, among adolescents' crimes. The purpose of this study was to provide a comprehensive review of literature for understanding adolescents’ theft behaviors. This study reviewed 63 academic articles, theses, and books for the understanding of conceptualizations and characteristics of theft behavior among adolescents. The authors implemented an exhaustive search for literature published in 1961 through 2010 on theft behaviors. Based on the literature review, the authors provide the expansion of understanding of theft behaviors, intriguing factors of theft behaviors, and intervening methods for theft adolescents. There are psychological, pathological, and societal factors explaining adolescent's theft behaviors. The psychological factors included such as low self-esteem, masculinity, morality, sense-seeking inclination, depression, etc. The pathological factors were related to impulsivity, mental disorders, neurological problems in the brain. Additionally, the societal factors included parenting styles, mother's depression, and school adjustment issues. The implications of this study were discussed.
