Abstract

Traditional attitude measurement method, bipolar rating scale(e.g., like-dislike rating scale) is limited by looking only two dimensions, the positive or the negative attitudes about target. Therefore, it cannot measure ambivalent attitude, which includes both optimistic and negativistic feelings on the target. Recently, several studies confirm the existence of the ambivalent attitude and pay attention to the effects of the ambivalent attitude. In this study, we investigate if the ambivalent attitude group on counseling service is existed with 241 college students. In addition, we examine the differences between ambivalent attitude group and other attitude groups (i.e., indifference, positive, and negative groups) on the scores of help-seeking intention, approach-avoidance conflict, and psychological distress. The results confirmed the existence of the ambivalent attitude group on counseling services. Traditional ambivalence rating scales cannot well distinguish the ambivalent group and indifference ambivalent group. Therefore, the measurements that can assess ambivalent attitude should be used to distinguish the ambivalent group from indifferent group. Finally, the significant differences on help-seeking attitudes, help-seeking intention, the amount of approach-avoidance conflict, and psychological distress were found among the groups.
