성인학습에서 성찰과 비판적 성찰의 이론적 계보 분석

A study of theoretical pathway analysis on “reflection” and “critical reflection” in adult learning

초록

이 연구는 성인학습에의 심리학적 관점과 사회학적 관점을 통합시켜온 전환학습이론의 핵심 개념인 성찰과 비판적 성찰의 이론적 계보 분석을 살펴보고, 그 속에서 개념적 본질을 밝히고자 하였다. 그리고 성인학습에의 심리학적 접근 중심에서 사회학적 접근으로의 관점 이동과 연관지어 성찰과 비판적 성찰의 이론적 계보를 분석하고자 하였으며, 이를 위해 Lewin(1951)의 3단계 변화이론을 준거로 설정하였다. 그리고 이론적 계보 분석의 범위를 한정짓기 위해 Finger & Asún(2001)이 제시한 성인학습이론 분류를 참고하여, 구체적으로는 경험학습이론, 상징적 상호작용론, 전환학습이론, 프랑크푸르트학파의 비판이론, 비판적 교육학을 분석 대상으로 삼았다. 연구결과, 해빙단계에서는 경험학습이론, 상징적 상호작용론 관점에서 성인학습에의 심리학적 접근이 우세한 개인 중심의 문제해결적 성찰 개념으로 파악되었다. 그 다음으로 이동단계에서는 Mezirow의 전환학습이론 관점에서 성인학습에의 심리학적 접근이 우세하지만, 사회학적 관점이 부가되기 시작한 과도기적 단계로, 사회적 맥락에서의 의사소통적 성찰과 개인의 자기성찰 개념으로 나타나고 있었다. 마지막으로 재결빙단계에서는 비판이론과 비판적교육학 관점에서 성인학습에의 사회학적 접근이 우세하고, 비판적 성찰과 사회 변혁을 위한 해방적 성찰 개념으로 제시되고 있었다. 해빙단계에서 이동단계를 거쳐 재결빙단계로 이동할수록 지식 획득과 개인성장을 지향하는 성찰적 사고 중심에서 비판적 문제제기를 통한 의식화, 해방을 지향하는 비판적 성찰 실천 중심의 개념으로 변화되고 있었다. 이러한 연구결과를 토대로, 다양한 실천현장에서의 성찰과 비판적 성찰 탐색, 집단적, 조직적 성찰 과정과 조직 구성원으로써의 개인의 자기성찰 탐색, 그리고 조직내 비판적 성찰을 지원하기 위한 다양한 요인들을 탐색하는 후속 연구들이 요구된다.

Abstract

This study analyzes the theoretical pathways of “reflection” and “critical reflection,” the core constructs in Transformational Learning Theory, which has integrated psychological as well as sociological perspectives in adult learning. This study investigates the conceptual characteristics of reflection and critical reflection in light of the theoretical transition from a psychological approach to a sociological perspective in adult learning scholarship. In doing so, Lewin's Change Theory (1951) was adopted for the analysis of theoretical pathways and Finger & Asún's categories of adult learning theory (2001) was adopted for the scope of adult learning theories to be examined. In particular, Experiential Learning Theory, Symbolic Interactionism, Transformational Learning Theory, Critical Theory of Frankfurt School, and Critical Pedagogy are included in the analysis of theoretical pathways. In the Unfreezing stage, the conceptual nature of reflection focused on individual problem solving with the dominant influence of psychological perspectives on adult learning, such as Experiential Learning Theory and Symbolic Interactionism. In the next Moving stage, psychological perspectives were still dominant, especially according to Mezirow’s view, and sociological perspectives were receiving more attention than before with their particular emphasis on communicative reflection and self-reflection of adult learners in social context. In the final stage of Refreezing, sociological perspectives such as Critical Theory and Critical Pedagogy became dominant as the theories for social transformation and self-emancipation. Through these stages of perspective changes, the focus moved from reflective thinking for knowledge acquisition and personal growth to critical reflection through consciousness and questioning for social emancipation. Further studies are needed to investigate how we could adopt the examined adult learning theories and concepts such as reflection and critical reflection in diverse adult learning practices, especially in the social context of organization.
