중학교 남학생의 흡연 일상화 경험에 관한 질적 사례 연구: ʻ노는 아이들ʼ을 중심으로

본 연구에서는 소위 ‘노는 아이들’이라 불리는 남자 중학생들을 대상으로 흡연 일상화 경험을 이해하고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 중학교 2학년 남학생 10명을 대상으로 면담 및 참여관찰을 하였다. 연구 결과, 중학교 남학생들은 초등학교 고학년에서부터 흡연이 일상화되기 시작되었으며, 그 중심에 또래문화가 있음을 파악할 수 있었다. 이러한 흡연 일상화는 크게 사회심리적 특성과 사회관계적 특성으로 범주화할 수 있었다. 먼저, 흡연은 사회화(‘되는’ 또는 ‘하는’) 과정을 통해, 그리고 일상의 양면성(‘상궤의 영역’ 또는 ‘불안정의 영역’)을 통해 전달･유지되는 사회심리적 특성을 가지고 있었다. 다음으로, 흡연은 한편으로는 부당한 방식의 담배 거래와, 담배 구매를 위한 갈취를 취하는 형식으로 폭력의 징후를 나타내었으며, 다른 한편으로는 흡연(또는 금연)을 ‘함께’하는 것으로 우정을 형성･지속시키는 가교적 특성을 나타내는 사회관계적 특성을 포함하고 있었다. 이러한 논의의 결과는 중학교 남학생의 흡연 문화에 대한 이해와 함께 다양한 학생 또래문화의 여러 상황 속에서 일어나는 특징적인 해석과 상호작용을 이해하는 데 기여할 것으로 여긴다. 또한 청소년 흡연 문제의 다각적 논의를 이끌어내어 보다 실질적이고 적합한 예방 및 대책을 마련하는 데 있어 기초자료로서의 역할을 할 것이다.
Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to understand how smoking is embedded in the daily lives of a group of male students in middle school, so called ‘the nonun-aedul (literally playing kids)'. Design/methodology/data/approach: We employ two different methods (i.e., interviewing and participant observation) to collect data on 10 male students (2nd year in Middle School). Findings/Results: The results of this study show that participants started to be accustomed to smoking when they were upper elementary school students and peer culture is critical in this process. Moreover, we find that this process can be categorized into two distinct social characteristics: social-psychological characteristic and social-relational characteristic. The former refers to the fact that smoking is propagated and maintained through socialization process and duality of daily lives (the normal course domain or unstable domain). The latter refers to the dual characteristics of smoking in social relationship. On the one hand, smoking is accompanied by the violence. This is because students illegally purchase tobacco products and extort money from their peers to make this expense. On the other hand, smoking (or no-smoking) helps student to build and maintain their friendship, as it allows them to share common experience, which we called bridge characteristic. Value: The findings of this study hold a few important implications. Foremost, our results enhance our understanding on the smoking culture of middle school male students. In particular, these findings are crucial for understanding and/or interpreting the distinct patters or interactions originated around student smoking in the context of student peer culture. Furthermore, we think our findings provide a clue to find better way to prevent adolescent smoking by approaching this issue based on new perspective.
