Shamanic rituals taking place in Aegissidang, MountBonghwa Dodang, and Bamseom Bugundang, werethoroughly investigated by three experts appointed bythe Board of Cultural Properties of Seoul MetropolitanGovernment. This religious belief and its relatedpractices is still carried on by many shamans, religiousspecialists and their followers with the doctrines beinghanded down orally rather than in the form of writtenscriptures. Nonetheless, it is still a struggle to convincemany Koreans of the cultural worth of shamanism. Owing to a deeply ingrained and stereotypical definitionof what constitute religious doctrines and practices, itsvalue as cultural heritage is often rejected. The SeoulMetropolitan Government and its Board have taken theinitiative in designating these rites as ‘intangiblecultural properties’ and hope this will lead to a morepositive understanding of shamanism as a significantand valuable part of Korean traditional culture.
