Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of distress tolerance and experiential avoidance on the relationship between college students' social anxiety and job-seeking stress. To this end, a survey was conducted using demographic questions and measures to measure social anxiety, distress tolerance, experiential avoidance, and job-seeking stress with 300 college juniors, seniors, and graduates seeking employment. Structure equation modeling analysis was conducted to test the research models, and the fit of the models was deemed to be good. Findings of the study are as follows. First, distress tolerance and experiential avoidance each acted as a mediator between social anxiety and job-seeking stress among study participants. Second, distress tolerance and experiential avoidance together mediated the relationship between social anxiety and job-seeking stress. These results present new perspectives concerning the role that distress tolerance and experiential avoidance play between social anxiety and job-seeking stress among college students, suggesting that interventions to increase distress tolerance and to overcome experiential avoidance could be helpful for college students dealing with job-seeking stress.
