Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the moderated mediating impact of negative urgency through experience avoidance on the association between uncertainty intolerance (IU) and mental health issues. Additionally, the study aimed to propose psychotherapeutic strategies for enhancing mental health among high school students. A sample of 159 students from a central region high school in Korea participated. The survey employed scales to measure IU, mental health indicators (depression, anxiety, somatization), experience avoidance, and negative urgency. The results are as follows. First, positive relationships were observed among IU, mental health indicators (depression, anxiety, somatization), experience avoidance, and negative urgency. Second, experience avoidance emerged as a mediator in the relationship between IU and mental health issues. Furthermore, negative urgency exhibited a moderating effect on the relationship between experience avoidance and mental health problems. Third, the moderated effect of negative urgency on the relationship between IU and mental health problems via experience avoidance was statistically significant. These findings have significant psychotherapeutic implications. Addressing experience avoidance is vital to prevent IU-related mental health problems. Given the elevated risk of mental health issues due to experience avoidance, especially among those with high negative urgency, moderating negative urgency could effectively enhance adolescent mental well-being.
