Since2010, a group of researchers in Korea have been developinga new experimental methodology of inventorying intangiblecultural heritage (ICH) utilising a new concept of collectiveintelligence and advanced information technologies. Theresearch team established Ichpedia, a web-based ICHencyclopedia and archive. The purpose of Ichpedia is fourfold. First, it functions as the most efficient digital ICHinventorying system available using modern informationtechnologies. It is possible to record and retain the dynamicfeatures of ICH through the use of multi-media resources. Secondly, Ichpedia can facilitate interactivity betweeninformation providers and users so that ICH communities, groups and individuals can directly access the system asinformation providers or editors. Using the functions of thesystem, their voices can easily be disseminated to thepublic. Such cooperative work will encourage moreawareness and identification of the fragility of ICH. Ichpediawill therefore be instrumental in improving theunderstanding of ICH communities and individuals andfinding better safeguarding methods. Thirdly, Ichpedia canreduce the economic burden of establishing a highlyefficient database system. It is easy and simple to use butoffers high efficiency compared to other web-based ICHencyclopedias worldwide. Ichpedia has the advantage ofbeing the least expensive option for the development andmaintenance of such a system. Lastly, it is hoped thatIchpedia will pave the way for digital innovation in the areaof ICH recording with the free and open distribution of thedigital platform and technologies.
